G2 Esports continue to exceed expectations, as they’re now just two steps away from securing the VALORANT Champions Tour 2024 Masters Shanghai title. They fought through the group stage with two close victories against T1 and Team Heretics but shifted into a higher gear in the playoffs, beating Paper Rex and Team Heretics for the second time.
Gen.G also had a bumpy road to the upper-bracket final. They had to reverse-sweep Fnatic in the first round and took down 100 Thieves in two maps. Gen.G were already serious title contenders before their first match, and so far, they’ve looked good. But they’re a bit too pricey.
G2 Esports have proven to be a very resilient team, capable of playing to their opponent’s level. And while this will be their toughest test yet, VCT 2024 Americas runners-up can push Gen.G to their limits.

100 Thieves entered VCT 2024 Masters Shanghai in excellent form and were even favourites to defeat Gen.G in the upper bracket semifinal. But they ran out of steam and lost in two maps.
Since then, 100 Thieves added another huge scalp to their collection with a 2-1 victory against Paper Rex, which put them back in the conversation of potential champions. Likewise, Team Heretics have looked a bit up and down so far this tournament.
They clawed their way through the group stage, defeated EDward Gaming, and got reverse swept by G2 Esports before crushing their regional rivals, FUT Esports, in the lower bracket. Even in VCT 2024 EMEA Stage 1, Heretics needed some time to warm up and now seem to be playing at their best.
Even though 100T are a strong team, they’ve not shown enough for the esports betting sites to price them as such big favourites. This fixture is closer to a coin flip than what the VALORANT odds suggest.

]]>This fixture highlighted two exceptionally strong duellists, Erick “aspas” Santos and Kim “t3xture” Na-ra, and proved to be the best game of the opening Swiss stage, stretching to three maps with standout performances from both players.
The map veto began with Leviatn banning Ascent and Split, while Gen.G removed Sunset and Bind, setting the stage for an exciting VALORANT series.
The first map, Icebox, was Leviatns choice.
Leviatn started strong on the attack, dismantling Gen.G’s defense and taking an early lead.
Although Gen.G managed to rally towards the end, the first half concluded at 7-5 in favour of Leviatn.
On defence, Leviatn continued their dominance, shutting down Gen.G to close the map 13-7, and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
Gen.G bounced back on Lotus.
Despite a rough start, they finished the first half with a two-round lead.
In the second half, Gen.G dominated, winning the map 13-5 and forcing a decisive third map.
Gen.G dominated Breeze, securing a commanding 8-4 lead by halftime.
They maintained their momentum, closing out the map 13-7 and winning the series 2-1.

The second match featured Team Heretics against Dragon Ranger Gaming.
Team Heretics, the EMEA second seed, entered the tournament with a substitute, as their main duelist, Dominykas “MiniBoo” Luka?evi?ius, took a break.
Dragon Ranger Gaming, having qualified via the VALORANT Champions Tour: Ascension China tournament, faced a tough challenge.
Starting on DRGs map pick, Team Heretics came in hot, quickly securing an 8-2 lead.
DRG managed to win the last two rounds of the half, reducing the deficit to 8-4.
However, Team Heretics extended their lead in the second half, winning the first two rounds and using that momentum to close out the map 13-5.
DRG showed more resilience on Sunset, going toe to toe with Team Heretics in the first half.
Despite this effort, Team Heretics came back strong in the second half, shutting down DRGs attack and winning the map 13-5, thereby finishing the series with a swift 2-0 victory.

G2 emerged victorious with a 2-1 win, setting the stage for an intense competition.

The opening match took place on Breeze, where rounds were fiercely contested.
T1 initially showcased their prowess, taking the lead on what is considered their best map.
However, G2 Esports turned the tide after the side switch, dominating the sandy shores and securing the first map of the tournament.
T1 struck back on Icebox, delivering a near-perfect performance.
Their aggressive playstyle earned them 11 rounds on attack, while G2 could only manage one.
T1 continued their momentum on defence, quickly wrapping up the map with a 13-1 victory, levelling the series.
The decisive third game on Lotus was a spectacle of high-stakes VALORANT.
The teams traded rounds until they reached overtime, tied at 12-12.
G2 then demonstrated their resilience, winning the next two rounds decisively to clinch the match.
Another highlight of the day was FunPlus Phoenix’s (FPX) dramatic win over FUT Esports.
This series, which extended to three maps, showcased the strategic depth and resilience of FPX, marking their first international triumph.
The match began on Sunset, FUT’s chosen map, where they initially led.
However, FPX quickly adapted, ending the first half with a commanding 9-3 lead and eventually winning 13-7.
On Lotus, FPX’s pick, FUT fought back, closing the first half 8-4.
FPX, led by standout performances from Chang “BerLIN” Po-lin and Qu “Life” Donghao, launched a strong comeback, though FUT ultimately won 14-12 in overtime.
The decider map, Icebox, saw FUT take an early lead with an 8-4 first half.
Yet, FPX staged a remarkable turnaround, winning nine consecutive rounds to secure a 13-10 victory and a 2-1 series win.

This victory not only highlighted their potential as strong contenders but also set the tone for their campaign in Shanghai.
With the Swiss stage format, both G2 and FPX have taken crucial first steps towards the playoffs.
T1 and FUT Esports, despite their losses, still have opportunities to advance.
The Swiss stage leads to a do-or-die double-elimination bracket, ensuring that every match is critical.
FPX’s coach, Deng “NaThanD” Senqiao, emphasized the team’s readiness to adapt and counter their opponents’ strategies, showcasing their confidence and strategic flexibility.
FUT Esports, under coach GAIS, remains focused on growth and the bigger picture, aiming for qualification for VALORANT Champions.
VCT Masters Shanghai continues on Friday with two more matches set to take place.

Gen.G are rightly favourites for this clash. They have been phenomenal so far this season, with a gold medal from VCT 2024 Pacific Kickoff and two silver medals from Masters Madrid and Pacific Stage 1.
Leviatan havent produced anything nearly as impressive — although they had their moments in VCT 2024 Americas Stage 1, with a 4-1 record in the group stage and a third-place finish in the playoffs. Still, this is a flawed team.
Leviatan are very hit-or-miss and quickly fall apart if things dont go as planned. Their post-plants need a lot of work, and overall they dont have any big strengths.
Leviatan have shown nothing that would suggest they have what it takes to win Masters Shanghai, and while they might do well against individually weaker teams, Gen.G should be too much for them to handle. A smaller wager on the Korean powerhouse to sweep is worth considering.

Dragon Ranger Gaming enter VCT 2024 Masters Shanghai as by far the biggest underdogs, priced at +15000 in outright betting markets. Team Heretics, on the other side, sit on the sixth line of title betting.
DRG qualified for this tournament as Chinas third seed. That is respectable, but they hail from a relatively weak region where EDward Gaming and FunPlus Phoenix are clearly the top two sides.
Team Heretics made a name for themselves early in the 2024 VALORANT season with a silver medal from the VCT 2024 EMEA Kickoff. They slipped in Madrid with an underwhelming top-eight finish but again found traction domestically with a runner-up result in VCT 2024 EMEA Stage 1.
Heretics looked flawed throughout the first split, but their resurgence in the playoffs was inspiring. While it may not seem like it, Heretics have all the tools to make it far in China. DRG, on the other hand, are prime wooden-spoon candidates.

]]>The current VCT season is set to conclude this coming weekend, with the final matches of VCT Champions 2023 being played in Los Angeles, USA.
In a video announcement, Riot Games’ Global Head of VALORANT Esports, Leo Faria, explained and detailed what changes will be made to the 2024 season.
Season 2024 will feature more teams than ever in the top tier of the sport, Faria said.
Massive congratulations to The Guard (Americas), Gentle Mates (EMEA) and Bleed Esports (Pacific), who battled through a year of Challengers to earn their promotions for a two-year stint at the international league.
Were also going to introduce a team affiliation and player loan system, allowing teams to more freely exchange players between tier one and tier two.
Faria also confirmed that the VALORANT Game Changers Championship will return as the last international event of the year.
After the game was released in China earlier this year, Faria announced that China would join Americas, EMEA and Pacific in having their own league in the VCT.
The biggest change to the VCT is the introduction of Championship Points across the international leagues and global events, with teams earning points based on their performance.
The Championship Points will work similar to other esports, such as CS:GO (BLAST Premier Points), Dota 2 (DPC Points) and Rocket League (RLCS Points).
Qualification for global events will be based on each teams most recent performance and Championship Points.
Faria went onto announce that the VCT LOCK//IN event will not return next year, instead each region will hold a two-week event to determine the top two teams in each region and they will qualify for the first VCT Masters.
Finally, Faria announced that Madrid, Spain, will host the first VCT Masters event and confirmed that Shanghai would host the second VCT Masters event of the year.

]]>After getting approval from the Chinese government in December 2022, the game only launched in July, three years after Valorant was released everywhere else in June 2020.
The Chinese government cleared the esports title for release in the country back in July of 2023, meaning if the VCT Masters Shanghai was held in spring next year, it will be around the same time as the one-year anniversary of the games release.
Weve seen how amazing and promising the community is in China, Leo Faria, Global Head of Valorant Esports at Riot Games, stated in a video announcement.
To show our appreciation and to celebrate the one-year anniversary of VALORANT in China next year, were very excited to bring Masters to Shanghai!
2024 will be a special year for the VCT and were happy to have all of you be part of it with us.
Even though Chinese players and organisations have only recently gained access to the title, the number one Chinese team, EDward Gaming, made it to the lower-bracket quarterfinals at VCT Masters Tokyo and finished in fifth-sixth place.
The date for VCT Masters Shanghai has not been confirmed yet, but considering that the VCT Tokyo Masters was held in June this year, we expect the event to be held around the same time again next year.
